A professional clean is the best way to ensure that any plaque that has been missed in your daily routine is cleaned away and that built up tartar is removed.
Each person will accumulate plaque and tartar at different rates due to individual circumstances. Contributing factors include your diet, oral hygiene routine, age and genetics. Our dental hygienists will assess your gums and let you know if there are signs of gum disease or if there are signs of something more sinister.
If plaque and tartar are not regularly removed from the tooth’s surface the gums can become painful, swollen, red and may even bleed. Bleeding is a sign that must not be ignored if you want to keep your teeth.
Generally professional cleans are recommended at 6 month intervals. If you have signs of gum disease your hygienist may recommend appointments every 3 or 4 months.
If your gums are inflamed and bleeding there is direct access for bacteria to get into your bloodstream which place you at more at risk for heart, kidney and respiratory disease, pancreatic and prostate inflammation, childbirth complications and diabetes.
When gum disease is not treated promptly it can lead to periodontal disease, death of your gums and loss of your jaw bone. If your gums are not healthy they cannot support your teeth and therefore you may start to find your teeth getting wobbly and perhaps ready to fall out.
